An old preacher was dying. He sent for his banker and his lawyer, both church members. When they entered his bedroom, the old man motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. He grasped their hands, smiled and stared at the ceiling. The two men were touched that he would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled because they remembered his many scathing sermons about greed that made them squirm in their seats. Finally, the banker said, "Why did you ask us to come?" The old man said weakly, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I want to go, too." 임종의 시간을 맞이한 늙은 목사가 자기 교회 신도인 은행가와 변호사를 오라고 했다. 두 사람이 침실로 들어오자, 목사는 자기 침대 좌우편에 와서 앉으라고 손짓을 하고는, 다가선 그들의 손을 잡고 미소를 지으면서 천장을 바라봤다. 두 사람은 자기들이 임종하는 자리에 특별히 불려온 사실에 대해 감동했다. 그러면서도 그들은 혼란스런 생각이 들었는데, 왜냐하면 평소에 재물욕에 대해 호되게 꾸짖는 설교를 많이 들으면서 시달렸던 일이 생각났기 때문이었다. 마침내 은행가가 "어째서 우리 두 사람을 부른 것입니까"라고 물었다. 그러자 늙은 목사는 가녀린 목소리로 대답했다. "예수님께서 돌아가실 때도 두 명의 강도들 사이에서 숨을 거두셨지요. 나도 그렇게 세상을 떠나고 싶어서요."
