The newly appointed chairman of the fund-raising committee decided to call personally at the home of the town’s wealthiest citizen, a man well known as a tightwad. The chairman pointed out how miserly it would seem if the town’s richest man failed to give a substantial donation to the charity drive. “You know,” said the man, “I have a 91-year-old mother who has been hospitalized for the past 5 years and a widowed daughter with 5 young children and no means of support. You’ll agree that charity begins at home.” “I’m sorry,” the visitor apologized. “I had no idea that you were saddled with so many family problems.” “You must be crazy to think I’d give money to strangers when I won’t even help my own relatives.” 마을 자선기금 운영회장으로 새로 선출된 사람이 구두쇠로 유명한 그 고장 최고갑부를 직접 찾아가기로 했다. 제일 가는 부자가 자선을 위해 돈을 내놓지 않는대서야 얼마나 째째해 보이겠느냐며 그는 운을 뗐다. “나는 5년간 입원해 있는 91세의 노모와 아이 다섯을 가진 채 의지할 데 없는 과부신세의 딸이 있어요. 자선이란 우선 내 집에서부터 해야 하는 것이 아니던가요.” “이거 미안하게 됐습니다. 집안에 그렇게 큰 문제들이 있는 줄은 미처 몰랐습니다.” “그런 내 집안 사람들조차 돌보지 않는 내가 알지도 못하는 사람들을 위해 돈을 내놓을 거라고 생각하다니 당신 정신 나간 것 아니오.”
